Pool Build Highlight: The Crittle Family of Goodyear, Arizona

Enjoy this interview with Norman Crittle, whose family recently moved to Goodyear, Arizona from California to build their “forever home” and realize their lifelong dream of having a heated swimming pool!

Why is having a pool important to you and your family?

Where we lived in California, water was our life. We frequently visited lakes and rivers. It was our dream to have a “forever home” with a beautiful back yard with water that we could enjoy year round. Having a heated pool at our home has been a life-long dream, and Presidential has made it a reality.

Which features were most important to you in designing your pool?

My wife, Rachel, and I spent weeks designing the space. It was critical that we had a place that screamed relaxation. With the way our home is designed, you can see from the front door all the way through the backyard and straight out to the White Tank Mountains. We wanted to take advantage of the view.

Designing sitting areas, the Baja Shelf, and the strategic positioning of the spa, were all structured to take advantage of our amazing view. Having the spa close to the house was also a key. With the spa as our focal point directly out the back door, we were able to maintain symmetry and keep our view in tact.

What advice would you offer to those just starting the pool building process?

Be patient and think it through. Most people believe that the process should fly by and they make mistakes with their design. When the truth is, it takes time and careful planning. Our designer spent weeks with us, making sure all our requirements were met and being patient paid dividends. We now have a beautiful backyard to enjoy for years to come.

Why did you choose Presidential Pools & Spas as your pool builder?

We researched multiple pool companies. Presidential wasn’t the cheapest, but Rachel and I don’t shop for cheap, we shop for quality. But what really sold us was the people. Every person we came in contact with was attentive and made us feel like family. They made us feel like our pool was important and that our happiness mattered. The communication was amazing from start to finish and we are extremely happy that Presidential was our choice.

What do you like most about your pool now?

We love how inviting our yard is day and night. The water feature brings sounds of serenity, the lighting sets an amazing ambiance, and the seating spaces provide a multitude of gathering and conversation areas.

Pool Build Highlight: The Stensland Family of Queen Creek, Arizona

This is the Stensland family’s second Presidential Pool!

Below you’ll find an interview with them that has advice for starting the design process, looking for the best pool company for you, and details about their experiences in designing and building two pools. They worked with Karin Tierney, one of our extraordinary designers, for each of these pools.

Why is having a pool important to you and your family?

The reason we wanted a pool was to not only improve the look of our backyard but also to enjoy with family and
friends. To cool off in the hot Arizona summers. For relaxation after a hard day of work. For all the fun memories it
will bring to us.

Which features were most important to you in designing your pool?

We wanted a water feature for the look and sound to add to our pool.

What advice would you offer to those just starting the pool building process?

When I first started I was unsure of the pool design I wanted. I went on the Presidential Pools website to look at the gallery of pools they have done to see what style I liked. From there it made the design process very easy and quick.

Why did you choose Presidential Pools & Spas as your pool builder?

I was recommended by a friend. I had also known Presidential to be a well known company.

We called almost every pool company out for a quote. We really liked Karin Tierney the best. Karin was knowledgeable, helpful, kind, honest and trustworthy, I could go on. Not to mention was the best pricing out of all the quotes we received.

Tell us about what it was like to work with Karin, your designer?

We just completed our 2nd pool with Karin. The 2nd time around was another great experience! Pool completed in 8 weeks as promised both times. Her attention to detail in the design process was a big help to us when we were unsure. Her communication skills are amazing she responded to us very quickly with any questions we had. You can tell Karin cares about each project as of it were her own. She truly cares about the experience and it shows. I have recommended her to many and will continue to do so. We are so thankful we chose her to help us with our pool projects. Our experience both times was excellent thanks to her. Karin goes above and beyond for her customers. We love you Karin!

What do you like most about your pool now?

We love everything about our pool from the design to the color selections to the materials. We can’t just pick one thing. Overall Presidential built us another beautiful pool. We look forward to the many memories and good times it will bring to us in the coming years. Thanks Presidential we are your biggest fans!

A Swimming Pool Designer’s Backyard: Doug Boston

Today we’re featuring a special interview with one of our amazing swimming pool designers, Doug Boston. Enjoy!

To get us started, can you tell us about the decking and pebble radiance color selections you made?

We decided on Kona Blue for our Pebble Radiance interior finish, and we doubled the amount of glass in the mix.

For the decking, we went with a Mexican Travertine from MSI called Classico Vein Cut. Mexican travertine is traditionally less porous than Turkish travertine.

You made some unique choices for the materials on the “City skyline” of your pool. Can you tell us what you used? Can you describe how you came to the design?

Along with glass tile, we actually used 36” x 8” flooring tile. The idea was to create these individual pillars that would stand out and give the back wall a contemporary feel but still blend with southwest theme.

You also have an interesting seating and lounging area built into your pool. How should people think about incorporating these areas into their own designs?

Absolutely! It’s important to know how you are primarily going to use the pool. I like to cool off in the summer and enjoy a cocktail, so seating options were important to me.

How do you and your family use the pool?

We enjoy floating on rafts and sitting at our table with a beverage.

What design choices did you make to complement your lifestyle?

Our travertine decking is very similar to our flooring inside the house and we wanted a seamless transition. We love glass tile so we chose a 1”x2” glass tile for our waterline and 18” raised areas.

What common mistakes do people make when designing their first pools?

Everyone has champagne taste but a beer budget so they cut out beautiful features that make their pool unique to them.

What advice would you give to someone designing their first pool?

If you are out of budget, try eliminating features that can easily be added later. Maybe less decking in order to get that unique water feature. Or skip the spa and instead add a heat pump pool heating unit with some therapy jets on a bench in the pool.

What do you think people should look for in a Swimming pool company?

Integrity.

Understand that in construction, issues come up and delays are inevitable but if you are using a company with integrity, a company that will make it right, you can never go wrong.

What else can you tell us about your pool design?

For those interested in a similar design, its 120 perimeter, 555 Square Feet, 2 multi-color LED lights, a 36” Trazzocrete table and a 9’ x 9’ x 18” deep baja shelf. This pool and decking retails for approximately $55,000.

Pool Build Highlight: The Martin Family of Surprise, AZ

This post highlights an interview with Martin family of Surprise, Arizona and pictures of their incredible pool. They worked with Karin Tierney here at Presidential Pools & Spas to build the backyard of their dreams.

Why is having a pool important to you and your family?

Living in Arizona, it is very important for us to have a pool in our backyard to cool down on hot summer days. It is also important to provide a place to have fun with family and friends.

We love to entertain, so it is important to have a large space to enjoy the gorgeous weather year-round where we can either party or relax. Lastly, given the fact that we are small business owners and work from home, it is imperative to have a gorgeous pool so we can enjoy our “office view” and utilize it during down-times.

Which features were most important to you in designing your pool?

It was very important to provide ample swim area for the kids to play in at the same time the adults were able to relax and enjoy the water. We wanted a swim area large enough for the adults to have fun as well. The diving pool provides endless fun for both the actual kids as well as the big kids (us adults)!

We knew we wanted a swim-up bar so the entertaining could be accomplished seamlessly and to offer a cool place to eat, drink and socialize. For the colder months, it was very important to have multiple water features so the pool could still be a center-piece for gatherings even when we the weather prohibited swimming.

We also knew we wanted a design that we could build upon in the future.

What advice would you offer to those just starting the pool building process?

If you are just starting out in the pool building process, I would suggest making a list of everything you want or think you need. Prioritize that list and make notes next to each item as to why you want it, importance of having it, who in the family wants it, and cost of obtaining each want/need. From there you can cross things off in order to stay within your budget. Don’t be afraid to dream big and price it out.You might be surprised at which items are achievable.

It’s also very important to communicate openly with your designer. The designers will not be offended if you do not agree with a design aspect and the only way to truly be happy with your finished pool is to make sure you convey all your thoughts with your designer and build team.

We chose Presidential Pools because of reputation, prices that couldn’t be beat and first-hand knowledge of their exceptional quality of work as well as responsiveness.

Having been in the swimming pool industry for almost 20 years, it was extremely important to choose a pool builder who 100% stands behind their workmanship, products and labor. My passion for swimming pools was parallel to the passion all of the employees and crews at Presidential Pools.

Tell us about what it was like to work with Karin, your designer?

When our family first began thinking about our “dream pool,” it started with an idea in our heads. The idea was roughly sketched out on paper and it was taken to Karin. We sat and talked and went over our list of wants and needs. There was a vision in our heads but we weren’t quite able to explain it in words. Karin pulled up some photos of completed projects that she thought fit what was trying to be conveyed; elements from each photo were given a thumbs up or thumbs down.

We left uncertain that we got our vision across clearly. A few days later, when we received a 3D image I realized we were wrong. Karin had actually listened and was able to interpret what was going on inside our brains! After a few tweaks here and there, the 3D rendering on the computer screen was pretty much perfection! Our communication with Karin didn’t stop there. She provided excellent advice as far as other elements of the pool during the build process and kept in touch from start to finish.

What do you like most about your pool now?

The pure beauty of the finished product is awe-inspiring! We love sitting on the patio just looking at it and enjoying the peacefulness of it.

Naturally, we absolutely love the huge swimming surface area for everyone to enjoy the pool. The multiple baja shelves provide ample space for tanning and relaxing while the diving area provides endless amounts of fun. The swim-up bar is excellent for socializing and the negative edge basin is large enough for the younger kids to play without interfering with the older kids.

The multiple lights provide an amazing night-time atmosphere while the multiple water features are both tranquil to listen to and visually stimulating. Presidential Pools has given us the backyard paradise with a resort style pool that we had dreamed of!
